Thanks to our well-established practice of local engagement, three young teens afflicted with Polio in a remote village outside Basra in Southern Iraq gained mobility with wheelchairs donated by GardaWorld personnel.
Our team met the family on a task in an isolated area on the outskirts of Basra. Keen to assist the small family, they bought the wheelchairs and basic supplies in the local town. When they returned to the family, one of our local national employees sought permission from a village elder to pass the items to the family. We also took along a company medic who reviewed the children and provided medical care and left behind some additional medicine.
The team stay in touch with the villagers, visiting twice a year to donate food and blankets in the winter and toys and games for the children in the summer.
