One of the most affected areas was Nowshera in the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KPK) Province, in just one week KPK received 9,000mm of rainfall, 10 times the average for the entire year.
Having witnessed the monsoon season firsthand our staff based in Islamabad wanted to contribute to the flood relief efforts directly. Rather than submit donations through the various government sponsored schemes staff wanted to deliver aid to one of the areas most affected, thus ensuring aid was provided promptly and to those most in need.
Funds were rapidly authorized, allowing our local office staff to procure over 2.5 tons of essential food items and medical supplies including; flour, rice, sugar, salt, pulses, beans, oil, tea and medical supplies (specifically those suitable for children) which local clinics advised they were critically short of.
As well as donating food and medical supplies, our staff liaised directly with local military commanders coordinating flood relief work in to establish the correct protocol for delivering aid directly to the Internally Displaced Persons (IDP) camps. Responding to the crisis in a volunteer effort, GardaWorld volunteer staff prepared the relief bundles for distribution to people most in need to assistance at the Nowshera displaced person camp. The military flood relief teams based at the Army Services Corps (ASC) School in Nowshera assisted in identifying those most in need; families who had registered for aid previously but had yet to receive assistance from either the local authorities or NGO’s.
Our country management team met with some of the refugees, listening to their stories of survival and their immediate concerns for the future before distributing the various food bundles and aid packages throughout the camp.
